Miami Star Receiver Malachi Toney Has Ankle Surgery, Out at Least Four Weeks

MIAMI, Fla. — The University of Miami Hurricanes received bad news on November 5: star wide receiver Malachi Toney has undergone ankle surgery and is expected to miss at least four weeks, very likely ruling him out for the rest of the regular season.
Toney hurt his ankle in practice and was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, undergoing the procedure commonly known as 'tightrope' surgery. Sports physicians note that a practice injury severe enough to require surgery for a high ankle sprain is unusual. Through the season's first eight games, Toney had 73 catches for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns as the core of the offense.
Miami plays at Notre Dame on November 7. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said on November 5 that his team was still preparing as if Toney might play and had a plan in place. Toney is expected to have a chance to return for the postseason.
