Salt Lake City Drops Capitol Hill Bike Lane Project as State Pulls $670,000 Grant

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Salt Lake City has dropped its plan to build bike lanes on Main Street in the Capitol Hill area, after the Utah Transportation Commission rescinded about $670,000 in project funding, according to City Weekly. The project had been scheduled to break ground in 2025; the commission voted on November 6 to revoke the active-transportation grant previously approved by the Utah Department of Transportation. The city itself asked for the grant to be cancelled, citing new requirements under Senate Bill 242, possible further legislative changes, and schedule delays caused by SB 195, SB 242 and a temple open house.

Under SB 242, streets in Salt Lake City fall under UDOT jurisdiction, and the city may not carry out street safety improvements on its own, limiting local control over street projects. The city has not said whether or when it will reapply for funding, and project details and legislative requirements remain unsettled. The episode reflects the growing constraints on local street projects as state oversight tightens, and similar city transportation projects may face the same approval hurdles.
