Utah Sen. Evan Vickers to Become Senate President, First From Southern Utah in 70 Years

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — State Sen. Evan Vickers of Cedar City, Iron County, will become the next president of the Utah Senate, the first Senate president from southern Utah in 70 years. Vickers is running unopposed after Sen. Kirk Cullimore lost his seat, with the formal election set for the evening of November 6.
Sen. Don Ipson of St. George praised Vickers as an inclusive leader who can unite senators from both the majority and minority parties. Vickers has long represented southern Utah, and his rise to the presidency is seen as a sign of the region's growing influence in the state Capitol.
Utah's new legislative leadership is taking shape after the November 3 midterm elections, with Republicans retaining control of the state Senate. In the House, Democratic seats slipped slightly and Republicans may lose about 15 seats. The Senate president presides over Senate proceedings, appoints committee members and coordinates the legislative agenda, making it one of the most influential legislative posts in the state.
