Virginia Board Approves Dominion Golden Substation in Sterling by 6-3 Vote

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. — The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted 6-3 to approve Dominion Energy's Golden Substation in Sterling, despite complaints from nearby residents about turbine noise from the adjacent Vantage data center campus.
The Golden Substation will supply power to Loudoun County's fast-growing cluster of data centers. Loudoun is one of the most concentrated data-center regions in the world, and expansion of power infrastructure has long been a local flashpoint. Supporters say the substation is essential to reliable power and economic development, while opponents worry about noise, visual impact and property values. The board's approval clears a key local hurdle, though the project must still meet state permitting and environmental requirements.
Meanwhile, the Virginia State Corporation Commission is holding public hearings in Richmond on NextEra Energy's proposed $67 billion acquisition of Dominion Energy. More than 70 members of the public have spoken at the hearings; telephone hearings are set for November 9 and 10, an evidentiary hearing begins November 17, and a decision is expected in January 2027.
