Follow-up: Thomas Markle Placed on House Arrest After Initial Appearance, Has Not Entered a Plea

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California, Thomas Wayne Markle, the father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was ordered released and placed on house arrest following his initial appearance in Florida. CNN reported that Markle, 82, appeared in federal court in Tampa, Florida, on November 6, where U.S. Magistrate Judge Thomas Wilson ordered him released on house arrest, and that he is not allowed to travel outside the Middle District of Florida and the Central District of California. The prosecutor's office said Markle has not entered a plea, and that his arraignment in California has yet to be scheduled and will likely take several weeks.
As GSM reported earlier the same day, Markle was arrested by the FBI in Lakeland, Florida, on November 6. The Justice Department said he is charged with one count of possession of child pornography, alleging that he kept child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including sexually explicit photographs of himself with prepubescent girls, in two Los Angeles-area storage units in California that he had rented since 2008; agents seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books containing suspected CSAM.
The case began in October 2026, when law enforcement learned that an individual had discovered suspected CSAM among Markle's possessions in the Philippines. As GSM previously reported, Meghan said in October that she had known since 2018 and had cut ties with her father to protect her children; Markle himself has previously denied the allegations.
The Justice Department emphasized that a criminal complaint merely contains allegations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt; if convicted, Markle would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
