April Weaver Elected Alabama Senate Majority Leader, the First Woman to Hold the Post

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Republican state Sen. April Weaver was elected majority leader of the Alabama Senate on November 5, becoming the first woman in state history to hold the post. Weaver, who represents District 14 and lives in Brierfield, won re-election on November 3 before the 24-member Senate Republican Caucus chose her to succeed Steve Livingston; her election took effect immediately.

The majority leader coordinates the majority party's legislative agenda and is among the most powerful posts in the state Senate. Weaver was first elected to the Alabama House in 2010 and served there from 2011 to 2020, chairing the House Health Committee — the first woman to hold that role. She entered the Senate through a 2021 special election, when she was the only woman in the Senate Republican Caucus. With the leadership change complete, the new Legislature convenes in January 2027.
