Arizona Democrats Elect New Legislative Leaders, Taking Both Chambers for the First Time in Decades

Democratic caucuses in the Arizona Legislature picked their new leaders in closed-door meetings on November 6, as the party prepares to control both chambers for the first time in decades. Based on The Arizona Republic's projections of unofficial results, Democrats flipped the state Senate and won a clear majority in the House.
House Democrats elected Oscar De Los Santos of Phoenix as speaker — the first Democratic speaker since 1966 — and Nancy Gutierrez of Tucson as majority leader. Tempe Rep. Janeen Connolly had announced a bid for speaker the day after the election but was not chosen. Senate Democrats picked Priya Sundareshan of Tucson as Senate president and Christine Marsh of Phoenix as majority leader.
Former Senate President Warren Petersen left to run for attorney general and lost to Democrat Kris Mayes, while Republican Sen. T.J. Shope, widely seen as a possible successor, conceded his race the day before the vote. The new leadership will run the Legislature when it convenes in January 2027.
