D.C. Hypothermia Season Runs Through March 31, Mayor Bowser Reminds Residents

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser reminded residents in a November 6 letter that the District has entered hypothermia season, which runs from November 1 to March 31, and that she joined community partners this week to take the Hypothermia Awareness Pledge — a commitment to look out for neighbors experiencing homelessness during the winter months.
During hypothermia season, Bowser said, the District provides free outreach and assistance, welfare checks, warming items such as blankets, gloves and hats, and free, accessible transportation to shelter 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Residents can request assistance or transportation to shelter for a neighbor by calling the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or dialing 311, and the mayor urged residents to save the number in their phones.
Bowser said the District has spent 12 years transforming its homeless services system to make homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring: the most recent count shows family homelessness down nearly 55 percent since 2015, and total unsheltered homelessness down 9 percent over the last year. The letter also noted that the 2027 health insurance open enrollment period began November 1 and runs through January 31, 2027.
