Canada and Austria Foreign Ministers Issue Joint Statement on Minerals, Security and Innovation

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand welcomed Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austria's Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, to Ottawa on November 6, 2026, and the two ministers issued a joint statement reaffirming the close and growing partnership between Canada and Austria, underscoring the importance of cooperation among like-minded partners to support international peace and security, strengthen economic resilience and uphold international law in a period of increasing geopolitical uncertainty.
The ministers welcomed the high-level political dialogue held in Ottawa last month and the inaugural Canada-Austria Political-Military Dialogue, held at the senior official level in Vienna this week, and noted their contribution to strengthening bilateral cooperation on foreign policy, multilateral cooperation, economic and trade exchange, and security and defence issues. Canada and Austria will mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.
On economic and innovation cooperation, the ministers committed to advancing collaboration in critical minerals, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, science, technology and innovation, and looked forward to exploratory discussions in Vienna next week on a bilateral memorandum of understanding on science, technology and innovation. They also encouraged officials to identify opportunities to strengthen resilient transatlantic supply chains.
The statement also addressed Canada-EU relations, with Austria reaffirming support for a deeper Canada-EU partnership and both sides stressing the full implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and stronger Canada-EU cooperation on economic security, defence industrial cooperation, innovation, clean technology, critical minerals and emerging technologies.
At the United Nations, Anand congratulated Austria on its election to the Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, and the two countries agreed to deepen cooperation during Austria's tenure, including on the protection of civilians in armed conflict, Women, Peace and Security, conflict prevention and peacebuilding. On Ukraine, the ministers reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, condemned Russia's recent attacks affecting civilian infrastructure and humanitarian facilities, and committed to stronger cooperation on recovery and reconstruction, humanitarian assistance, energy security and the return of Ukrainian children forcibly transferred by Russia. They also reaffirmed their shared interest in a stable, democratic Western Balkans and its European integration pathway.
