D.C. Councilmember Pinto Urges Five Governors-Elect to Withdraw Their National Guard Troops on Day One

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

D.C. Councilmember Brooke Pinto, who chairs the council's public safety committee, convened a hearing on Thursday, November 5, renewing calls to end the National Guard deployment in Washington and urging newly elected Democratic governors to withdraw their states' troops on their first day in office. Democrats flipped five governorships in the November 3 midterms, and the incoming governors must decide whether their Guard troops remain in the capital. Pinto said she will write on the council's behalf to the governors-elect of Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Texas.

President Trump deployed the National Guard to Washington in August 2025, and 3,097 members are currently serving in the District; the five states account for 628 of them, including 514 from Georgia and 110 from Iowa, according to a November 2 tally by Joint Task Force-District of Columbia. The Congressional Budget Office estimated in a January letter to Congress that the deployment costs about $55 million a month. The council cannot order the troops out; the Guard serves under federal authority and can be recalled only by the sending governors or the federal government, making the letter a political appeal.
