Follow-Up: Justice Department Awards Jacksonville More Than $73 Million Under Model Cities Initiative

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

The U.S. Department of Justice on November 6 formally awarded Jacksonville, in Duval County, Florida, more than $73 million through its Model Cities Initiative (MCI) to combat violent crime and strengthen public safety. GSM reported earlier in the day that the Attorney General would travel to the city to present the award; the Department has now announced the specific amount.

"The Model Cities Initiative reflects the Trump Administration's commitment to reducing crime across the country and ensuring the safety of every American," Attorney General Todd Blanche said. "These cities are setting an example of proactive law enforcement that will strengthen the rule of law and improve public safety in their jurisdictions. As violent crime rates continue to fall to historic lows, the Department of Justice is redoubling our efforts to invest in local communities and keep American families safe."

Jacksonville was selected from nearly 50 applicant cities for its strong interagency partnerships and comprehensive public safety strategy, led by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office through proactive law enforcement, targeted prosecution, community engagement and collaboration with federal, state and local partners. From 2023 through 2025, the city reduced murders by 38%, robberies by 25% and aggravated assaults by 21%, while non-domestic shootings fell from 1,340 to 1,029. The funding will expand investigative and prosecutorial capabilities, modernize crime-fighting technology and strengthen the city's ability to identify and apprehend violent offenders. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters also welcomed the award.

Announced in June 2026, the Model Cities Initiative directs nearly $300 million in federal resources to four selected jurisdictions: East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana; Jackson, Mississippi; Jacksonville, Florida; and St. Louis, Missouri. Funding can support hiring sworn and non-sworn personnel, adopting new technology, purchasing equipment, enhancing forensic capacity, and providing services addressing mental health and substance use and reducing recidivism.
