Man Who Shot Deputy Sentenced to 55 Years to Life Plus Six Years in Attempted Murder Case

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, in San Bernardino County, California, issued a statement on November 6 welcoming the sentencing of Nicholas Campbell, who was convicted of the attempted murder of Deputy Marcus Mason. Campbell was sentenced on November 6 to 55 years to life in state prison, plus an additional six years.
On July 16, 2022, Campbell shot Deputy Mason multiple times while Mason was responding to a call for service in Rancho Cucamonga. Mason was critically wounded and nearly lost his life, surviving thanks to the quick actions of fellow deputies and medical personnel.
Mason's injuries ultimately led to his medical retirement, ending a career dedicated to serving and protecting the community. For more than four years, Mason, his wife Katie, and their family have endured significant hardships, and their victim impact statements at the sentencing described the lasting physical and emotional toll of the attack.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Mason was doing his job, protecting the community he swore to serve, when his life was forever changed. He thanked the prosecution team for its dedication and said Mason will always be part of the Sheriff's Department family, with his and Katie's continued support from the entire department.
The department said no prison sentence can undo the harm Campbell caused or restore what the Mason family has lost, but the sentencing brings accountability and a measure of justice. It said acts of violence against law enforcement officers will not diminish its commitment to public safety and to serving the people of San Bernardino County.
