Salt Lake City Drops Capitol Hill Bike Lane Project as $670,000 State Grant Is Rescinded

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Salt Lake City has abandoned its plan to build bike lanes on Main Street in the Capitol Hill area after the Utah Transportation Commission voted on November 6 to rescind about $670,000 in active transportation funding that the Utah Department of Transportation had approved for the project, which had been scheduled to start construction in 2025. The city itself asked for the grant to be cancelled, citing new requirements under Senate Bill 242, the possibility of further legislative changes, and a construction timeline extended by Senate Bills 195 and 242 and the Temple open house.

Under SB 242, passed in the 2026 legislative session, Salt Lake City's local street grid is subject to new state oversight, and the city must agree a plan with UDOT by January 1, 2027, to mitigate traffic-calming impacts on key corridors. The city has not said whether or when it will reapply for the funding.
