Two Candidates Vie to Be Nashville's Interim Sheriff; Metro Council Votes November 17

Friday, November 6, 2026 · States · GSM News

Nashville's Metro Council will vote on November 17 to choose Davidson County's first new sheriff in nearly 25 years. Sheriff Daron Hall announced last month that he is leaving for the private sector after 24 years in office; his last day was October 19. Hall had just won a seventh term unopposed in August, and his departure requires the council to appoint an interim successor promptly. After a month-long nomination period, two candidates remain: Chief Deputy Ruby Joyner and former lieutenant Jared Irvine.

Joyner has served as acting sheriff since Hall's departure, and Hall has lobbied council members to appoint her. Irvine nominated himself for the appointment in a letter filed with the Metropolitan Clerk's Office on October 22. Both candidates must first appear before the council's Rules, Confirmations and Public Elections Committee on November 10. Whoever is appointed must run in next year's election to serve out the remainder of Hall's term.
