Chicago Chinatown Unveils Honorary Street Sign for Woom Sing Tse, Killed in 2021

Chicago's Chinatown held an honorary street sign unveiling on Friday, November 6, at 2:30 p.m. at Cermak Road and Princeton Avenue, naming the corner 'Honorary Woom Sing Tse Way' for Woom Sing Tse, a Chinese-American resident killed in 2021; the City of Chicago had issued the sign. Tse was fatally shot at about 11 a.m. on December 7, 2021, on the sidewalk near 23rd Place and Princeton Avenue, across from Haines Elementary School, by an assailant with no connection to him; his killer has since been sentenced.
The ceremony was joined by the office of Alderman Nicole Lee of the 11th Ward and Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley. Tse, an immigrant from China who lived in Chinatown for more than 40 years and worked as a cook and restaurant owner, was remembered by his daughter Susan Lam and son William Tse, who said having his name in the neighbourhood where he lived means a great deal. His death spurred Chinatown residents to push for security cameras, lighting and patrols in the years since.
