Red Flag Warning for Southern California on Saturday: Santa Ana Gusts to 65 mph, Humidity as Low as 10%

The National Weather Service office in San Diego has issued a Red Flag Warning for inland Southern California from 1 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, November 7, covering the valleys and mountains of San Bernardino and Riverside counties, the Inland Empire, the Santa Ana Mountains and foothills, and the San Gorgonio Pass area near Banning.

Forecasters expect northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph during the warning period, with isolated gusts to 65 mph in wind-prone passes, canyons and foothills, while humidity falls to 10 to 15 percent on Saturday. The Weather Service says that combination means any fire that starts could spread rapidly, and urges residents to avoid outdoor burning and to be careful with anything that could spark a fire, including vehicle tow chains, outdoor power equipment and cigarettes.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when fire weather conditions reach critical levels. Southern California's fall and winter Santa Ana winds, driven by inland high pressure and heated as the air descends from the mountains, produce one of the most dangerous fire weather patterns of the year. Residents are advised to clear flammable material from around their homes, know their evacuation routes, and follow updates from local fire agencies. (Source: National Weather Service)
