San Joaquin County Offers Seniors $1,000 a Month for a Year: Applications Close Nov. 18

For seniors living on fixed incomes, rising rent bites first. San Joaquin County, California, has launched CASH SJC, a cash assistance program for senior households: selected low-income participants will receive $1,000 a month for 12 months, with no strings on how the money is spent. Applications are open through Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026.
The program is run by the Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin in partnership with the nonprofit GiveDirectly and community organizations, and is funded by the California Department of Social Services. Up to 250 eligible households can take part. Applicants must be 60 or older, live in San Joaquin County, and meet low-income guidelines; the county seat is Stockton.
Unlike restricted vouchers, CASH SJC provides unconditional cash: it can go to rent, utilities, medication, or a car repair, as each household's needs dictate. University of Pennsylvania housing researcher Vincent Reina, the program's principal investigator, will evaluate how the cash affects housing stability and well-being, building evidence for similar policies.
Seniors and family members can apply through GiveDirectly's CASH SJC program page or contact the Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin. With places capped and less than two weeks left in the application window, eligible households should apply promptly. (Source: Housing Authority of the County of San Joaquin)
