Feds Invest $1.5 Million to Help States Flag Open Vehicle Recalls at Registration

Friday, November 6, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Nov. 5 a $1.5 million investment to help states improve vehicle recall completion rates and keep American roads safe.

The funding will go to states prioritizing three things: developing a reliable process to inform vehicle owners of any open safety recalls when they register or renew their vehicles; data-driven methods to measure recall completions; and comprehensive reports outlining the methodologies used, so best practices can be shared. NHTSA also encourages applicants to assess driver attitudes toward specific notification methods and to track which vehicles receive remedies following state notification.

"A vehicle with an open recall creates an avoidable hazard on our roads," said NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison, who announced the investment at the "Recalls Next" public meeting on the future of vehicle safety recalls. "By giving states the resources to flag open recalls when drivers register or renew their vehicles, we can keep dangerous cars off our roads and American families safe."

The funding opportunity is now open, with applications due by Feb. 4, 2027. Drivers can also check at any time, free of charge, whether their own vehicle has an open recall by entering its vehicle identification number (VIN) on NHTSA's website.
