NEW YORK — The man found dead on October 30 inside a large black trash bag on a sidewalk outside a church in Canarsie, Brooklyn, has been identified as Joseph Owusu, 24, the New York Post reported on November 6. According to the Embassy of Ghana, the body was discovered at about 9:20 a.m. on October 30 outside a church at East 93rd Street and Avenue L.

Owusu, who was from Ghana and lived in the Olinville section of the Bronx, worked as a caregiver for people with disabilities and served as a chorister and pianist at his local Methodist church. Neighbors described him as a devout, warmhearted man who regularly attended church.

Surveillance footage obtained by News 12 shows a white sedan stopping at about 2:00 a.m. on October 30, with two people removing the large black bag containing the body from the trunk and leaving it on the sidewalk. The body was found hours later by a man scavenging for scrap metal; law enforcement sources said the bag also contained wires and pieces of scrap metal.

Police said on November 6 that Owusu's cause of death remained under investigation and that no arrests had been made. Ghana's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has confirmed his death and visited his family, who are calling for a thorough investigation.

The case comes days after another tragedy in New York's Ghanaian community, the October 29 fatal shooting of a 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager on his way to school in the Bronx.
