Michigan Worker Sues Employer and Staffing Agency, Alleging a Gorilla Photo Was Pinned in Her Locker and She Was Fired After Complaining

DETROIT — Juanita Porter, a resident of Southfield, Michigan, has filed a lawsuit against WillScot, a modular building and storage company, and Ultimate LLC, a staffing agency. According to the complaint, over several months at two Metro Detroit job sites she endured repeated racial slurs and sexual harassment, and after she complained she found a gorilla photograph pinned inside her own locker. These are the allegations in the complaint; the case has yet to be heard in court.
Porter's side says she first complained about a gorilla image appearing at work, and that the image was later pinned inside her locker. The complaint says management ignored her repeated complaints and that she was ultimately fired, which she alleges amounted to harassment and retaliation. Detroit television station WDIV (Local 4) reported the lawsuit, filed on grounds of racial and sexual harassment and retaliation, around November 6.
WillScot is a publicly traded company providing modular office space and portable storage across North America; Porter worked at its sites through the staffing agency. The reports did not include a response from either company to the complaint's allegations, and no court has made findings on them.
