Los Angeles Council District 9 Race Stays Tight as Mazariegos Trails Ugarte by Fewer Than 1,000 Votes

LOS ANGELES, Los Angeles County, California - The latest count released by the Los Angeles County Registrar on Friday, November 6, showed the race for the open City Council District 9 seat still too close to call, with Estuardo Mazariegos fewer than 1,000 votes behind leader Jose Ugarte. Ugarte had 16,855 votes, or 51.40 percent, and Mazariegos 15,939 votes, or 48.60 percent, a gap of 916 votes. The two are competing for the seat being vacated by term-limited Councilmember Curren Price in a district that runs from downtown Los Angeles into South Los Angeles. Ugarte previously served as Price's deputy chief of staff, while Mazariegos is co-director of the Los Angeles chapter of the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, a nonprofit. The same count showed District 3 candidate Barri Worth Girvan leading Tim Gaspar 31,776 to 30,449, widening her advantage to 1,327 votes. The Registrar said about 414,000 ballots countywide remain to be counted, with the next update scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7.
