SEATTLE, King County, Washington - The City of Seattle announced on November 6 that it will award a total of $125,000 to two community organizations serving LGBTQ residents, with the Lavender Rights Project and GenPride each receiving $62,500, focused on transgender and gender-diverse people who face barriers to services. Mayor Katie Wilson and Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck set aside a one-time appropriation of $550,000 in August to meet urgent needs in Seattle's LGBTQ community, of which $300,000 goes to the Human Services Department for distribution to local community organizations, including $50,000 for community resource events and $250,000 to support community organizations. The Lavender Rights Project primarily serves transgender and gender-diverse people of color, with a particular focus on Black residents, while GenPride serves older LGBTQ adults. The city said more awards will be announced in the coming weeks. The city's Office for Civil Rights also hosted a community resource day on November 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at El Centro de la Raza, 1660 South Roberto Maestas Festival Street, connecting LGBTQ residents with community organizations and available resources.
