New York Announces Cancer Care Training Partnership: Buffalo's Roswell Park to Train Cell and Gene Therapy Fellows from Puerto Rico

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a cancer care training partnership on November 6 at the SOMOS conference: Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in western New York will work with San Juan City Hospital and the University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center to create an advanced clinical fellowship in cell and gene therapy, training Puerto Rican cancer specialists.
Roswell Park, located in Buffalo, Erie County, is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Under the announced arrangement, the fellowship runs for one year, with the first cohort traveling to Buffalo for clinical rotations. The curriculum was designed by Roswell Park physician Brian Betts following guidelines of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT), focusing on cell and gene therapy, a frontier field of cancer treatment.
Roswell Park President and CEO Candace S. Johnson said the goal goes beyond training individuals: the partnership is meant to help Puerto Rico build sustainable cancer care capacity so patients can receive advanced treatment closer to home.
Cell and gene therapies, including CAR-T treatments, demand highly specialized staff and facilities, and few centers in the Caribbean offer full training capacity. New York and Puerto Rico share deep population ties, and the state framed the partnership as part of health-capacity building between the two. The three institutions will announce selection of the first fellows and their Buffalo rotation schedule in due course. (Source: Office of the Governor of New York)
