Italy Moves to Cut About 7,000 School Jobs: Enrolment Down 700,000 in Seven Years as Draft Budget Draws Opposition

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World · GSM News

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government has included cuts of about 7,000 school jobs in its draft 2027 budget, recently approved by the cabinet: from the 2027-28 school year, 4,925 teaching posts and 2,049 administrative, technical and school support positions would be eliminated, a total of 6,974, as student numbers continue to fall.

Official data show enrolment in primary and secondary schools fell to 7.7 million in the 2024-25 school year from 8.4 million in 2017-18, a drop of about 700,000 in seven years. The government argues that school staffing levels need to be adjusted in line with falling enrolment.

The government estimates the reductions will save about 83.9 million euros in 2027 and about 251.7 million euros in 2028, a two-year total of roughly 336 million euros. Opposition from educators is growing. The staffing cuts are part of a draft budget law and could be changed during parliamentary deliberations, ahead of a general election due in 2027.
