Da Xi Hui Weekend Culture Day in San Marino on November 7: Huangdi Neijing Reading and King Hu's Dragon Inn

Da Xi Hui (DA XI HUI), based in San Marino, Los Angeles County, California, will host a new edition of its "Weekend Culture Day" on Saturday, November 7, starting at 1 p.m. at its venue at 2455 Mission St. The afternoon program features a tea gathering, a guided reading of the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), and a Chinese-language classic film salon screening King Hu's wuxia landmark Dragon Inn (1967), followed by a discussion led by film producer and director Fan Xin. Advance registration by private message is requested.
The program opens at 1:00 p.m. with the Da Xi Tea Gathering, a relaxed get-together over tea. At 1:50 p.m., the 47th session of the Da Xi Chinese Studies Sharing and Reading Club turns to a classic reading of the Huangdi Neijing. A foundational classic of traditional Chinese medicine, the text carries ancient insights into life, nature, the balance of yin and yang, and the art of nourishing health; this session reads the classic together to explore a philosophy of living in tune with the seasons and in harmony of body and mind.
From 3:00 to 5:30 p.m., the 42nd session of the Chinese Classic Film Salon screens the Taiwanese film Dragon Inn (1967), directed by King Hu and starring Polly Shang-Kuan, Shih Chun and Pai Ying. A landmark of Chinese-language wuxia cinema and one of Hu's most representative works, the film is set in the Ming dynasty and follows a deadly struggle at a remote border inn between the descendants of a loyal official and the agents of the Eastern Depot. With masterful staging, rhythmic fight choreography and a film language blending Chinese opera and traditional aesthetics, Hu opened a new frontier for the wuxia genre.
The screening is part of Da Xi Hui's Chinese film series "Four Regions of Chinese-Language Cinema, 1960s-1970s," which brings together Two Sisters (1964, directed by Xie Jin) from mainland China, The One-Armed Swordsman (1967, directed by Chang Cheh) from Hong Kong, Dragon Inn (1967, directed by King Hu) from Taiwan, screening this week, and The Arch (1970, directed by Cecile Tang Shu Shuen) representing overseas Chinese cinema.
The organizer sums up the spirit of the day as "friendship over tea, inspiration from the classics, and life reflected on screen," and asks attendees to register in advance by private message so the program can be arranged.
