San Francisco Announces $12 Million Plan to Improve Mission District Streets and School Safety

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and Mission District Supervisor Jackie Fielder announced a $12 million plan on Nov. 6 to improve long-standing street conditions in the Mission District, focused on the 16th and 24th Street BART plazas and the area around Marshall Elementary School in the heart of the neighborhood. Marshall Elementary is a public school with a majority Latino student body, and parents and residents have pressed the city for months over homelessness, open drug use and public safety. About $9 million of the funding comes from a charitable donation by Crankstart, the family foundation led by San Francisco billionaire Michael Moritz, and the remaining $3 million from the state budget. The plan includes upgraded street lighting, added public-safety technology, and more street ambassadors to assist families and businesses and connect people experiencing homelessness with services. The city says improvements will roll out in phases, aiming to make school commutes and daily travel safer. It is the latest neighborhood investment Lurie has directed at the Mission since taking office.
