China's Shanghai Ballet performed the classic ballet 'The Butterfly Lovers' at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6, presenting the love story often called China's 'Romeo and Juliet.' It was the company's first return to North America in more than five years, drawing many Chinese-American audience members and ballet lovers. 'The Butterfly Lovers,' drawn from the beloved Chinese folktale of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, is among the most representative original works in Chinese ballet. The Shanghai Ballet is one of China's most influential ballet companies, and this North American tour is regarded as a significant moment in U.S.-China cultural exchange. Tickets ranged from $46 to $93; the theater said audience response was enthusiastic, with many Chinese families bringing children so the next generation can experience Chinese culture through a classic work.
