Follow-Up: France's Cost-of-Living Protests Enter a Fourth Weekend: Interior Ministry Counts 146,000, Youth Unions Claim 250,000

PARIS — France's protests against the high cost of living entered a fourth consecutive weekend on November 7. The Interior Ministry counted 146,000 demonstrators nationwide, including 46,000 in Paris, while the youth inter-union alliance that organized the day put the figures at 250,000 nationwide and 75,000 in Paris. Both counts were well below those of the previous weekends, as the movement continued to ebb.
The ministry said 141 actions were held across the country. In Paris, the inter-union march set off from Place de la République toward Place de la Nation and proceeded largely calmly, with confrontations breaking out during the dispersal around Place de la Nation; about a hundred Yellow Vest supporters also gathered at Place de la Concorde despite a ban. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez deployed about 70,000 police officers and gendarmes. By 7 p.m., authorities reported about 360 arrests nationwide and nearly 40,000 preventive checks on roads, rail routes and at stations.
The weekend protest wave began on October 17 and has declined week by week in the Interior Ministry's count: 550,000 on October 17, 410,000 on October 24 and 320,000 on October 31, with 575,000 taking part in the nationwide strike day on November 5 in between. This round was led by a youth alliance including the high-school organization USL and the student groups Union étudiante, FAGE and UNEF, with demands centred on pay, public services and retirement. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has called unions and employers to a social conference on November 9 on wages and purchasing power, and education unions have called a further strike for November 10.
