Dearborn Police Say Federal Immigration Operation Arrested 3 People Without Advance Notice to the City

The Dearborn Police Department, in Wayne County, Michigan, said in a news release on November 7 that federal immigration officers arrested three people during an operation in the city that morning, and that the department had received no advance notice.
The operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) took place at about 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, near Warren Avenue and Mead Street in East Dearborn, according to the release. Federal authorities contacted the Dearborn Police Department only after the arrests had taken place. "There was no advance notification or coordination with the City of Dearborn or the Police Department," the release said.
As of Saturday afternoon, federal authorities had not provided the department with the names of those arrested or the reasons for their arrests, police said, and the department was still seeking more information from federal authorities.
"Communication between federal agencies and local law enforcement helps support public safety and ensures we can respond accurately to residents' questions and concerns," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said in the release. "We encourage federal authorities to communicate with our department when conducting operations in our community."
The ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Detroit Field Office and the Department of Homeland Security did not provide comment to the Detroit Free Press on the Dearborn operation as of Saturday afternoon.
It was the second time in recent weeks in the Detroit area that local officials said they had no advance notice of federal immigration enforcement activity. On October 20, Canton police and Plymouth-Canton Community Schools said they had no advance notice of immigration enforcement activity near Hulsing Elementary School, which prompted officials to shelter students and staff in place for more than an hour; the ICE field office also did not respond to an earlier request for comment about the Canton incident.
