BERLIN — A new INSA poll conducted for Bild am Sonntag found that 82 percent of respondents are dissatisfied with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's work, a record high since he took office, while only 13 percent are satisfied. The survey was conducted on November 5–6 among 1,004 respondents and published on November 7.

Dissatisfaction with Merz rose two points from early October. In January, 67 percent were dissatisfied and 24 percent satisfied. His governing coalition of the Union (CDU/CSU) and the SPD received identical ratings: 82 percent dissatisfied, up three points from October, and 13 percent satisfied.

Sixty percent of respondents said their personal economic or social situation had worsened under the coalition, while only 6 percent said it had improved.

On voting intention, the opposition Alternative for Germany (AfD) leads at 29 percent, followed by the Union at 19 percent, down one point from the previous week, the Greens at 15 percent, the SPD at 14 percent, the Left Party at 10 percent and the FDP at 5 percent.

Merz took office in May 2025 and has pushed fiscal and welfare reforms; the poll shows his government facing its most severe public pressure since taking power.
