Godzilla Minus Zero Earns $13.5 Million on Day One in North America; Japan Opening Sets Live-Action Record

Godzilla Minus Zero, Toho's sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, earned $13.5 million on its first day in North America, including $6.7 million from Thursday previews, and is tracking for a $30 million to $33 million domestic opening weekend, according to Deadline. That would be the biggest domestic opening ever for a live-action foreign-language film.
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film opened in Japan on Tuesday, November 3 — Godzilla Day — selling more than 590,000 tickets for about 910 million yen (roughly $5.7 million) on its first day. Toho said it was the biggest opening day ever for a live-action film in Japan, foreign or domestic; the three-day total in Japan has reached 1.37 billion yen (about $8.7 million). The film opened in North America on Friday, November 6, in 3,254 theaters, and its first day alone already beat the entire opening weekend of its predecessor.
Godzilla Minus One opened to $11.4 million in the United States in December 2023, finished with $57.1 million domestically and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Opening-night audiences gave the sequel an A CinemaScore, rare for a non-English, R-rated film. Industry tracking puts the global opening at around $60 million. Weekend figures are trade estimates; final results are subject to exhibitor reporting.
