Follow-up: Krakow Shooting Death Toll Rises to 6 in Poland; Police Confirm Gunman Acted Alone

Polish police said in an updated statement that the death toll from the shooting on Saturday afternoon, November 7, in the Main Market Square in Krakow, in southern Poland, has risen to at least six people, including four women and two men, with 15 more people injured. Police had earlier put the toll at at least five killed and more than a dozen injured; the update raised the number of dead and confirmed the number of injured.
A police spokesperson said officers used their weapons during the arrest and the man returned fire, leaving two police officers among the injured. Police confirmed that the gunman is a Polish citizen who acted alone and that officers are not seeking a second suspect. The gunman, who was wearing military-style attire, was shot by officers, detained and taken to a hospital; his identity and motive have not been released.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, in his latest statement, offered his deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, praised the police officers who risked their lives, and appealed to politicians of all stripes not to exploit the tragedy. President Karol Nawrocki said he was deeply concerned and that his thoughts were with the victims, the wounded and their families. Bartosz Grodecki, the head of the National Security Bureau, travelled to the scene and urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.
The shooting occurred at about 3 p.m. local time on Saturday, when a man drove onto the Main Market Square in Krakow's Old Town and opened fire at random people from within his vehicle. The square is one of the city's main tourist destinations. Police and emergency services were still working at the scene, the background and all the circumstances of the attack remain under investigation, and the incident is still developing.
