Follow-Up: Hundreds Hold a Candlelight Vigil at Melbourne's State Library for Slain Rider Jianming Feng as the Community Petitions for Rider Safety

MELBOURNE — Hundreds of people gathered outside the State Library of Victoria in central Melbourne on the evening of Saturday, November 7, for a candlelight vigil for Jianming Feng, the Chinese food-delivery rider killed the night before. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on the vigil that night; footage showed mourners lined up holding candles, and flowers were laid around Frederick Way, where the attack happened.
Feng, 47, from Shaanxi, had delivered food in Australia for nearly nine years. On the evening of November 6, he and another rider confronted a man tampering with their bikes near Queen Victoria Market and were stabbed; Feng died at the scene. Australian media reported that the second rider, 34, whose injuries were not life-threatening, has been discharged from hospital. Victoria Police arrested a 51-year-old man in Footscray on the morning of November 7; the investigation continues and police have not yet announced formal charges.
Alongside the mourning, mutual aid and hard questions continue. According to Australian Associated Press (AAP), a fundraiser set up by the Melbourne Chinatown Business Association for Feng's family had raised more than A$7,000 by Saturday, to help his wife and children travel to Australia urgently and cover funeral costs. An online petition titled 'Rider Safety First' is also collecting signatures, calling for an investigation into HungryPanda's lost-food policy so that riders are not put at risk trying to recover stolen orders.
