Follow-up: Poland's Interior Minister Says Krakow Gunman Was Influenced by Far-Right Ideology; Police Confirm No Criminal Record

Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said at a news briefing on Saturday evening that the man who opened fire on Saturday afternoon, November 7, in the Main Market Square in Krakow, in southern Poland, was influenced by far-right ideology. "Everything points to the fact that the shooter was influenced by far-right ideology, a matter that will also be subject to investigation," he said, adding that police officers and agents of the Internal Security Agency were working both at the scene and at the gunman's family home.
In updated information, police said the gunman is a 24-year-old Polish citizen with no previous criminal record, from Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski in southeastern Poland. Police said he was wearing military-style clothing and a bulletproof vest and used a civilian version of an AR-15 rifle, with many other weapons and ammunition found in his car. Police had earlier confirmed that he acted alone and that officers are not seeking other suspects.
The casualty figures were unchanged: six people were killed, including four women and two men, and 15 more were injured. The injured include two police officers, one of whom suffered three gunshot wounds, is in a serious condition and is undergoing surgery, while the other was also shot. The victims have not yet been identified.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk headed to Krakow. He offered condolences to the families of the victims, praised the officers who responded, and appealed to politicians of all stripes not to exploit the tragedy. Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski announced increased security measures, including road barriers, along main streets in the old town of the capital, Warsaw.
The shooting occurred at about 3 p.m. local time on Saturday, when a man drove onto the Main Market Square in Krakow's Old Town and opened fire at random people from within his vehicle. He then exchanged fire with responding officers on a nearby street, was shot, detained and taken to a hospital. The gunman's name has not been released, his motive remains under investigation, and the incident is still developing.
