Follow-Up: Skydivers Killed in Lake Elsinore Mid-Air Collision Identified as Licensed Jumpers Aged 56 and 29 Taking Part in a Women's Formation Event
LAKE ELSINORE, Riverside County, California — The Riverside County Sheriff's Office has identified the two women killed in the November 6 skydiving collision at Lake Elsinore as Georgia Jean, 56, of South Dakota, and Levi Pimentel, 29, of Illinois.
Both were licensed, experienced skydivers who had travelled to take part in a women's formation skydiving event at Skydive Elsinore. About 20 women took part in the event, which aimed to form a 19-person formation and break a California record. The two exited the aircraft at about 12,500 feet; their freefall and parachute deployments were normal. As they prepared to land, about 150 feet above the ground, they collided, their parachutes became entangled, and both fell heavily to the ground. Emergency personnel arrived at about 11:47 a.m., and both women were pronounced dead after being taken to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar.
Skydive Elsinore manager Josh Hall said there was no indication of equipment failure and that the centre is cooperating with authorities. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and will collect the women's parachutes for further investigation. Strong winds were present at the time, with gusts of up to 20 mph reported near March Air Reserve Base; whether the wind played a role in the collision is not yet clear, and the investigation is ongoing.
