Zelenskiy Calls SBU Corruption Revelations 'Frankly Shameful,' Promises More Personnel Decisions

Saturday, November 7, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Kyiv — President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his evening address on November 7 that corruption revelations inside Ukraine's domestic security service were "frankly shameful, absolutely unacceptable," Reuters reported. There have already been dismissals at the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) because of the case, he said, "and there will be other personnel decisions," adding that he expected a full investigation with results.

This week, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office unveiled charges against several senior security and law enforcement officials over their alleged role in shielding a vast criminal ring. Investigators said the group ran scam centres, traded drugs and produced fake currency and cigarettes, with the help of top employees from the SBU, the National Police and the Prosecutor General's Office; the probe, dubbed "Operation Carthage," involves at least a dozen individuals.

SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad dismissed two senior officials this week and pledged full cooperation with investigators. On November 6, a Ukrainian court ordered the arrest, pending bail, of a former SBU general in connection with the case.

Zelenskiy also said he had proposed legislation requiring all SBU employees to publicly declare their assets. The SBU enjoys sweeping law enforcement and military powers, and the case has fuelled public anger in Ukraine over official impunity. (Source: Reuters)
