Colorado House Democrats Pick New Leaders; Jennifer Bacon Set to Be First Black Woman Speaker

DENVER, Colorado — The Colorado House Democratic Caucus on November 6 elected its leadership for the 76th General Assembly, choosing Denver Rep. Jennifer Bacon as Speaker-designate. Bacon will become the first Black woman in Colorado history to hold the post. She defeated fellow Rep. Andrew Boesenecker in the caucus vote.
The caucus also chose Denver Rep. Javier Mabrey as Majority Leader-designate and Northglenn Rep. Jenny Willford as Assistant Majority Leader-designate, along with two majority whips and two caucus co-chairs. The new leadership team is made up entirely of women, people of color and LGBTQ caucus members.
Democrats won supermajorities in both chambers in the November 3 election. The new House Democratic caucus will have 49 members, its largest in 90 years, more than two-thirds of them women. The new legislature convenes in January 2027.
