CAIRO — A preliminary count released by Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population on November 8 put the toll of the day's train accident in the Al-Ayyat district of Giza Governorate at four passengers dead and 88 injured, higher than the figures first reported. GSM's earlier report, citing Egyptian media, had said the train driver was killed and at least 64 people were injured; the ministry later updated the injured count to 88 and confirmed four deaths.

The ministry said 72 ambulances took part in the evacuation: 49 injured people were taken to Wasta hospital, 29 to Al-Ayyat hospital and 10 to Atfih hospital. Of the four dead, two bodies were taken to Wasta hospital, one to Atfih hospital and one remained at the scene. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar ordered hospitals in Giza and Beni Suef governorates to raise their state of readiness and continue treating the injured.

The accident happened near the Gerza village junction in Al-Ayyat on the Cairo-Aswan line, where four carriages of a passenger train derailed and overturned. Saudi reports, citing Egypt's railway authority, said the derailment was caused by a collision between two trains; according to Youm7 and other outlets, train No. 134 from Giza to Fayoum rear-ended train No. 2010 from Cairo to Aswan between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa stations. The prosecutor general has sent an investigative team to establish the circumstances and the number of casualties.

The ministry's figures are a preliminary count and may be revised again. Some Egyptian media, citing informed sources, have put the number of injured at about 150, which differs from the ministry's count; the final toll will be the one announced by the Egyptian authorities.
