Follow-up: Pope Leo XIV Arrives in Buenos Aires Today for Four-Day Argentina Visit, to Meet President Milei

BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 8 — Pope Leo XIV's three-country apostolic journey to South America moves to its second stop on Sunday. According to the programme published by the Holy See Press Office, the Pope concludes his Uruguay leg and departs Montevideo's Carrasco International Airport at 3:30 p.m., arriving at Buenos Aires' Aeroparque Jorge Newbery airport at 4:30 p.m. for an official welcome.
After landing, he travels to the Casa Rosada presidential palace for a welcome ceremony at 5:20 p.m. and a courtesy visit to Argentine President Javier Milei at 5:50 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., he meets the country's authorities, civil society and the diplomatic corps at the Palacio Libertad cultural centre, where his address is expected to be the most closely watched speech of the visit.
Reuters reported that this is the first papal visit to Argentina since Pope John Paul II in 1987; Argentina is also the homeland of the late Pope Francis. Leo remains in Argentina until Nov. 11, visiting Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Luján: on Nov. 9 he visits a care centre for people with disabilities in Claypole, celebrates a large public Mass in the capital and prays vespers with Argentina's bishops at the Metropolitan Cathedral; on Nov. 10 he travels to Córdoba; and on Nov. 11 he celebrates Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, the national Marian shrine, before flying to Peru.
The 12-day journey, the first to the Americas of Leo's pontificate, covers ten cities in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru and ends in Peru on Nov. 17. GSM has reported the journey's departure and the Uruguay stops in earlier stories. After the Pope's lung surgery in October, his physicians cleared him for the trip, and the Holy See Press Office said on Nov. 3 that the programme had not been changed.
