Iowa Governor-Elect Rob Sand Says Voters Gave Him a Mandate and He Will Work With Republicans

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Governor-elect Rob Sand said on November 6, during a taping of Iowa PBS's Iowa Press, that voters gave him a governing mandate in the November 3 midterm election, and that he will work with Republicans once he takes office.

Sand defeated Republican Zach Lahn by 55 percent to 44 percent and will succeed Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds, who did not seek re-election. Reynolds won re-election in 2022 by 18 points; Sand said the size of the swing from 2022 to this year shows what the voters' mandate means.

Sand said his transition team is in place and is drafting a state budget that would cap income eligibility for private-school education savings accounts, tax and more tightly regulate marijuana, and set rules for data centers. Iowa currently spends about $1 billion more than it takes in, and Sand said the new budget will aim to cut the state deficit.
