Illinois State Museum–Dickson Mounds Opens “I Am Not a Costume” on November 14: Ayasha’s Story Explains Why Indigenous Regalia Is Not a Costume

LEWISTOWN, Illinois — The Illinois State Museum–Dickson Mounds will hold the opening of its new exhibit, I Am Not a Costume, on November 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 10956 North Dickson Mounds Road in Lewistown. The museum says it is continuing to build relationships with Tribal Partners to tell the stories and histories of the Indigenous Peoples of this landscape, past and present, and that the opening is the first of new projects and goals it will share throughout the month.
The exhibit tells the story of Ayasha, a young Indigenous girl who goes to school and finds people dressed in fake regalia for a costume party. Upset by the misrepresentation, Ayasha creates a plan with her family to share the importance of Indigenous regalia and culture, and why her Indigenous heritage is not a costume.
The museum says it is honored to help preserve and share the stories and histories of Indigenous Peoples of this landscape. The opening event takes place on November 14; the museum page does not list a closing date for the exhibition.
