MIAMI, Florida — The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University opens its new exhibition What Takes Root on November 14, on view through April 11, 2027. The exhibition marks the launch of the Green Family Collection at the museum, a new initiative dedicated to supporting and collecting the work of artists connected to South Florida.

The museum says the program builds on a nearly three-decade history of collecting made possible through the Dorothea and Steven Green Endowment, beginning in 1997 with the acquisition of Rubén Torres-Llorca’s Evasion Plan. What Takes Root brings those earlier acquisitions into conversation with the inaugural round of the Green Family Collection; this year’s acquisitions include works by Nereida Garcia Ferráz, Loni Johnson, Silvia Lizama, Shayla Marshall, Reginald O’Neal, Chire “VantaBlack” Regans and Roscoè B. Thické III. The full exhibition brings together more than 30 artists, among them José Bedia, Edwidge Danticat, Jess T. Dugan, Abelardo Morell and Frank Stewart.

The museum’s fall season opening runs from 6 to 9 p.m. on November 14, alongside Ofelia Rodríguez: Psychic Jungle, the first major U.S. solo exhibition of the Colombian artist, with a performance by Cumbiamba. The Frost Art Museum sits on FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus at 10975 SW 17th Street in Miami, open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Mondays; admission is free.
