Murray State University Reports 10,010 Students for Fall 2026: Second-Largest Enrollment in a Decade, Freshman Retention at 80.4%, Average Time to Degree Falls Below Four Years at 3.99

MURRAY, Kentucky — Murray State University released its fall 2026 enrollment report on November 5: total enrollment is 10,010 students, including 8,449 undergraduates and 1,561 graduate students, its second-largest student body over the past decade, with students from 114 Kentucky counties, 49 states and 55 countries.
On student progression, the university said its first-time, full-time freshman retention rate has risen to 80.4%, with a persistence rate of 92% for first-time freshmen. The average time for a Murray State student to earn an undergraduate degree is 3.99 years, which leads Kentucky public postsecondary institutions and is the first time in the university’s history the figure has measured below four years. This year’s freshman class numbers 1,523 students, a 2% increase from last year, the third-largest freshman class in a decade and the class with the highest grade-point average among Murray State freshman classes in the past decade; incoming students from the neighboring states of Illinois, Tennessee, Missouri and Indiana continue to increase.
The report adds that 71.5% of this year’s freshman class arrived carrying earned college credit hours, the highest percentage recorded at the university in a decade, and that Racer Academy, the university’s dual-credit program for high school students, has 1,035 enrolled students, a 10% increase over last year. President Dr. Ron K. Patterson said the fall 2026 enrollment reflects the continued confidence students and families place in the university. The university says a record $140 million was offered in financial aid and scholarships based on its most recent reports; admission for fall 2027 is open, and the university will host a Racer Day open-house event for prospective students and families on November 14 beginning at 8 a.m.
