[Video] Lance Hammer's "Queen at Sea" Wins Two Silver Bears at Berlin: Juliette Binoche Stars in the 121-Minute Drama, the Director's Second Feature in 18 Years, Now in North American Theaters

Queen at Sea, written, directed and edited by American filmmaker Lance Hammer, is now playing in North American theaters: Greenwich Entertainment opened it in the United States on October 30, 2026, with Canadian engagements from November 6. It is Hammer's second feature, 18 years after his 2008 debut Ballast, and runs 121 minutes.
The film follows Amanda (Juliette Binoche), who comes from Newcastle to London to care for her mother Leslie (Anna Calder-Marshall), who is living with advanced dementia, and clashes with her stepfather Martin (Tom Courtenay) over questions of care and who gets to decide. Florence Hunt plays Amanda's teenage daughter.
Queen at Sea had its world premiere in the main competition of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on February 17, 2026, where it won the Silver Bear Jury Prize, and Courtenay and Calder-Marshall shared the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance. It was released in the United Kingdom by Curzon on September 18.
In review coverage, Jim Slotek of the Canadian outlet Original-Cin, writing on November 5, noted that the film opens with an elderly man seen from behind climbing two flights of stairs, and described it as a film about steps and missteps; Slotek wrote that Hammer deliberately refrains from judging his characters and confronts viewers with questions that have no simple answers.
