Free-Housing Rumor Sends Hundreds to the Mayfair Hotel on Nov. 5; Event Was for Pre-Enrolled Clients Only

LOS ANGELES, California — On Thursday, November 5, hundreds of residents flocked to the Mayfair Hotel in downtown Los Angeles believing they could receive free housing on site, only to learn the event was never open to the public. The rush began with a viral social-media post that inflated a hotel event into a chance at a free apartment for anyone. According to FOX 11, the housing event was actually limited to about 300 people already enrolled in a Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) program, who had to attend with their assigned case managers. LAHSA, established in 1993, coordinates homeless services across the Los Angeles region. The Mayfair Hotel was purchased by the city in August 2023 as part of Mayor Karen Bass's homelessness initiative to provide urgently needed interim housing. City officials said such rumors raise false hopes for families in need and urged residents to seek housing help through official channels.
