Cole Brothers Win the 2026 Wilkins Forest Stewardship Award for Sustainable Forestry
SIDNEY, Maine — The State of Maine announced on November 6 that brothers Will Cole and Don Cole of Sidney have received the 2026 Austin H. Wilkins Forest Stewardship Award. The brothers run the family logging business Trees Ltd., working public and private forestland across central and southern Maine. About 90 percent of Maine is forested, and forestry is a major state industry. The state singled out the brothers' harvesting work at the Holt Research Forest in Arrowsic, which demonstrated sustainable forest-management methods and provided a model for landowners and other visitors; the Holt Research Forest is managed by the Maine TREE Foundation to demonstrate sustainable harvesting to woodland owners. The award is presented jointly by the Maine TREE Foundation and the state Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry to honor sustainable working-forest stewardship, and is named for Maine forestry pioneer Austin Wilkins.
