Tennessee House Speaker Proposes Ending the Grocery Tax on Milk, Eggs and Bread; Democrats Call It 'Laughable'

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton proposed a grocery-tax cut on November 6 that would remove the state sales tax from milk, eggs and bread, sparking a partisan fight. Sexton filed House Bill 6 after the midterm elections, proposing that from July 1, 2027, the three staples be exempted from Tennessee's 4% grocery sales tax. Tennessee is one of 13 states that still tax groceries, and its rate is among the nation's highest. Democratic state Sen. Charlene Oliver called the plan 'laughable'; she and state Rep. Aftyn Behn have repeatedly proposed repealing the grocery tax statewide and plan to file again, proposing to offset the cost with a tax on corporations' combined worldwide income. The fight over the grocery tax is expected to continue in next year's legislative session.
