Wende Museum's Space Art Exhibition Now Open: How Cold War Space Exploration Inspired Artists, Through October 2027

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · Events · GSM News

The Wende Museum's new exhibition Competing Cosmologies: Interpreting the Sky opened on November 7, 2026, in Culver City, Los Angeles County, California, and runs through October 17, 2027, at 10808 Culver Boulevard. Co-curated by the museum's chief curator Joes Segal, associate curator Emma Diffley and NASA historian Lois Rosson, the exhibition explores how new discoveries in space exploration during and after the Cold War inspired visual artists around the world.

Artists in the show include Chesley Bonestell, Sun Ra, former Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, Lia Halloran, Beatriz Cortez, Chitra Ganesh and Chinese artist Li Tianbing. Among the works is Paul Laffoley's Thanaton III (1989), painted as a device for talking to extraterrestrials, with viewers meant to press their hands to the painted hands and stare into the eye. Opening day featured a curator-led tour at noon and opening speeches with a garden reception at 2 p.m.

On November 21 at 2 p.m., the museum's Community Center hosts a free panel, Visualizing the Cosmos: Science | Art | History, with Nobel laureate and astrophysicist Kip Thorne, artist Lia Halloran and historian Lois Rosson, on how artists and scientists inspire each other. The Wende Museum, known for its Cold War collection, offers free admission. (Source: Wende Museum)
