Minneapolis Council Budget Chair Slams Mayor's 2027 Budget Proposal; Final Vote Set for Dec. 15

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — Minneapolis City Council Member Aisha Chughtai of Ward 10, who chairs the council's budget committee, publicly criticized Mayor Jacob Frey's proposed 2027 city budget on November 7, arguing it makes the most vulnerable residents bear the cost. Writing in an opinion piece, she said that with federal food benefit cuts leaving children hungry and one in six Minneapolis households facing food insecurity, the mayor's budget eliminates a modest food-insecurity prevention program and entirely cuts a civil rights program that had recovered millions of dollars in stolen wages for low-wage workers, while increasing police overtime spending beyond what goes to homelessness prevention and response. She said the council will work through the budget in the coming weeks to correct those choices in the final version. The final public hearing and vote on the 2027 budget are expected on December 15.
