Mississippi Democrats Press Secretary of State Michael Watson to Own Voter Roll Problems; At Least 50,000 Voters Flagged Inactive

Sunday, November 8, 2026 · States · GSM News

JACKSON, Mississippi — The Mississippi Democratic Party on November 7 publicly called on Secretary of State Michael Watson to acknowledge his office's responsibility for problems with the state's voter rolls.

State party chair Cheikh Taylor said Watson, responding to voters' concerns on social media, shifted blame to county election commissions, while the root of the problem is Experian data his office promoted. Mississippi Today reported that the contract Watson's office signed in December 2024 expressly stated Experian could not guarantee the accuracy or reliability of the data, yet the office signed off and distributed it to counties statewide.

Since the rollout began, at least 50,000 voters have been placed on inactive status over address mismatches, with the inactive count surging in the run-up to the November 3 election, according to the report. Watson has announced a run for lieutenant governor and has called the data rollout a success. The state party demanded that Watson face his office's role in the voter roll confusion instead of blaming county election officials.
